Mayflies USA at Luna Lounge - October 11, 2007

Went over to Luna Lounge in Williamsburg last Wednesday night to see Chapel Hill, North Carolina's Mayflies USA. I had never heard of them before...and when I received their invite on MySpace, I went and checked out some of their songs, and loved what I heard. What I didn't know was that the band had actually been disbanded for several years...and they were getting back together for one show to celebrate guitarist Matt Long's upcoming wedding. I loved the songs on their MySpace profile...and when I saw their influences (Teenage Fanclub, Big Star, Replacements, etc) and heard their songs, I knew I had to go. They rocked, the sang harmonies worthy of one of my favorite 70s southern power-pop bands the Scruffs, they were clearly having a great time, and probably due the fact that this was a one off gig, many of their friends (who also obviously adored them) showed up for the party. I almost felt as if I had stumbled back in time to 1989 to some UNC frat party with one of those great Chapel Hill bands (such as Dillon Fence) playing before they got a record deal. Girls dancing, yelling how much they love Mayflies USA...great power pop being played...people having fun enjoying a great band.

I'm really happy I got to hear Mayflies USA at least once...because who knows, this might have been their last gig. I for one hope not...I'd like to see them again.
